Only Kansas City, and KC Pet Project, could pull this off.
On the weekend of September 13th, 30 of our shelter dogs will be taken out on Furlough to experience the ultimate dog day out in Kansas City! Furlough gives these dogs the opportunity to experience what life is like outside the shelter and what it feels like to be a part of a family. Attendees have the option to sponsor a dog from our shelter for a deserved day on the outside.
We have partnered with multiple businesses all throughout the Kansas City area that will offer giveaways and fun, dog-friendly activities. Your sponsorship raises money for the 10,000+ animals we care for every year. It also includes one waived adoption fee should you (or someone your dog meets on Furlough) decide you’d like to keep them forever!
KC Pet Project, the 501c3 nonprofit operator of the Kansas City, MO animal shelter, is the largest No-Kill shelter in Kansas City, MO, and the 3rd largest open-admission No-Kill shelter in the United States. We are keenly focused on progressive, life-saving policies and programs and work under the motto “Solutions – Not Excuses.”
More than 10,000 pets will come to KC Pet Project in 2017, each one in need of a soft bed, medical care, nourishing food, life-saving vaccinations and hope for a home. Your support and generosity will make the difference in the life of a homeless dog or cat in Kansas City. Together, we are creating a No-Kill Kansas City.
All people taking dogs on Furlough receive a Doggy Bag that includes a water bowl, leash, Citibank bandana, martingale collar, poop bags, food for the Furlough period, a t-shirt, and treats.
“I have participated in the KCPP Furlough for the past two years. What a great experience. KCPP provides everything needed for a successful day out on the town with these beautiful babies. Last year we had Tangerine, she was a pit mix and was so polite, well behaved, and we could just tell how much she loved being out. We took her to all of the supporting business partners, which were wonderful and welcoming. Such an amazing way to get these babies visible and out in the communities. Tangerine was adopted shortly after the Furlough by a family who saw her with us. I am looking forward to participating again this year.”

“2018 was the first time that we furloughed a dog and it was a really rewarding experience. I had previously volunteered for KCPP on multiple occasions and had also accompanied friends during prior KCPP Furlough events. There was something special about furloughing a dog myself though and it felt really good to give little Teresita a tour of the city! It was a really fun day for us as we hopped from patio to patio in Westport and I think Teresita had a blast as well. I HIGHLY encourage dog-lovers in the KC area to take part in this to support one of the most important causes in this city!”

“The furlough event that KCPP puts on annually is a great experience that my wife and I look forward to every year. They take the time to partner you with a dog that’s a good fit for your needs and as if you need incentive to show off your new furry friend, they work with local retailers to reward you and your new best friend for hitting the city for a full day of fun! I encourage everyone to get involved with this event, you’ll be glad that you did!”
